When you meet a business owner or find one online you are considering hiring or buying from, do you ever Google their name?
Many people do. Try Googling your name to see what happens. If you have a LinkedIn profile, the chances are it will appear near the top of the search results.
That can be a good or bad thing. It’s a good thing in terms of giving you more credibility, making you more findable to consumers and giving you a free listing on Google. It may be a bad thing if your profile is not up to the standards consumers are expecting to see.
One of my business philosophies is it is better to give no impression than to give a bad impression. So, while it is great to be more findable and have consumers see that you are listed on a reputable platform, if they open the link to your profile and see that it is poorly put together, it may turn them off to reaching out to you to further inquire about your services.
So, the short answer to the question of “Will your LinkedIn profile actually help you get more clients?” is.. it may or may not.
What will make your LinkedIn profile more appealing, more findable to LinkedIn users and bolster your credibility?
Let’s start from the top and work your way down. The first thing viewers will see is your banner. Do you have a banner, or is it just the generic background all new LinkedIn profiles default to? What does your banner look like? Does it look professional and tell viewers what you offer?
We’ve all heard the phrase, “A picture speaks a thousand words,” and it’s so true for businesses. Anytime you can add a visual element, such as a photo, graphic or video to any content about your business, do it. You want to make it as easy and interesting as possible for consumers to understand what you offer and decide if they want to inquire farther. If you don’t have a colourful banner that has a visual element on your LinkedIn profile, you are missing out on a great opportunity to lure in consumers to learn more about you and what you offer. Also, make sure to add your logo and company name to your banner. It’s called, “branding.” To have your logo branded into the minds of consumers, they need to see your logo over and over again, especially with your company name, so they will equate the two with each other.
As you may have noticed, there is a lot to using your LinkedIn profile to generate business, as we have only covered the banner at the top of your profile. Watch for further articles about how to monetize LinkedIn.
